Health - During Pregnancy

During pregnancy weight gain is common and expected. Some women will lose weight during the first trimester, but there is no need to be concerned. The first trimester brings many challenges for you and your body and your body is working overtime to help your little bean grow in the early stages. You may experience morning sickness and a loss of appetite, both on which contribute to weight loss. If you do become concerned about your weight loss throughout your pregnancy, please speak to your Obstetrician and midwife.

 

Once you reach the second trimester you should start to see a steady weight gain as your baby grows and your body endures the natural changes during pregnancy. A normal weight gain throughout your pregnancy is 8-12kgs, however this can vary as everyone is different. An example being, if you start your pregnancy underweight you may be required to gain more weight, or vice versa, if you start your pregnancy overweight you may need to gain less. It is important that you consult your Obstetrician and midwife about your weight gain as they can determine what is best you and your baby.

 

Now let’s talk supplements! As we have all heard, pregnancy supplements are important while you a pregnant. However, before you start taking anything head to the doctors for a quick visit and blood test. Your doctor will check all levels to see where you may be lacking and design a plan for you throughout your pregnancy. All pregnant women are required to take a pregnancy and breastfeeding support supplement which can be brought over the counter at any pharmacy and even the local supermarket. Depending on your blood results you may also require supplements such as Vitamin D and Iron. These are all important to provide a healthy body inside and out to support your baby’s growth.

We all know we need to eat a well-balanced diet and exercise regularly to support our Health and Wellbeing, but it’s hard to know all the correct recommendations. During pregnancy these requirements change again, and you need to alter your daily diet to meet these new needs. We have all heard the saying “Your eating for two” when pregnant, but this doesn’t mean you need to double your daily intake. Here at Positive Vibes we offer a “Diet Assessment and Plan” to help you have a better understanding of these requirements. Our plans work with you to see where you are lacking in your current diet and what changes may need to be made.

What the plan includes:

-      Two phone calls throughout the planning period to discuss your diet, timelines and recommendations

-      An Overall look at your current diet and dietary needs
- The completion of a Food Journal over a one-week period
- Calculations on current dietary requirements and lists of where you are lacking, using the Australian guidelines
- A Personalised meal plan with daily recommendations
