Enjoying the day’s sunshine is something that today’s society avoids from fears it may cause them to develop skin cancer. As this is definitely a justified fear, the sunshine is also something human beings need to absorb and metabolise.

Some of the benefits of enjoying the sun include:

  • Vitamin D plays a vital role in your health and can help reduce your risk of developing cancers such as colon and breast. Although you can absorb Vitamin D from, vitamins and some fruits and vegetables, the best source of Vitamin D is from the sun. 20 minutes in the summer and 40 minutes in the winter is recommended, however always consultant your healthcare physician as this may vary for the individual.

  • Daily sun exposure can help someone who has a health concern with their blood pressure. When your body has signs of high blood pressure, a compound known as nitric oxide is realised to help lower it. A study was completed at the University of Edinburgh which concluded that is compound is released into your body once you absorb the sunshine.

  • Daily sunshine helps to improve your bone health by the absorption of Vitamin D3. Vitamin D3 helps to regulate the calcium absorption in your body and as a result of this you lower your risk of suffering bone fractures.

  • Daily sunshine has been thought to increase the release of serotonin. Serotonin is a hormone released by the body’s brain and it is a great mood stabiliser, can help lower levels of depression and can help bodily functions.

To allow the sun to have a positive impact on your health and wellness you must create a balance. Too little sunlight may cause you side effects and illness, and on the other hand too much may cause you skin cancer.

The best guide to follow is to avoid sunlight when the UV index is high and always ensure that you are protected when in direct sunlight.

The sun can have a positive impact on your emotional, physical, and mental wellbeing when utilised safely.

On personal experience, I always find that when I am feeling a little overwhelmed, stressed or down, the sun is my first point of call. Being able to sit outside for 20 minutes and enjoy one of nature’s doctors, always helps to clear my mind, calm my emotions, and prepare my attitude for the remainder of the day.
