Pregnancy and giving birth is one of life’s most precious moments. Childbirth will be the most empowering, physically draining, and emotional experiences of your life, and like all other life experiences, you will want to remember this moment forever and writing down your birth story will help you to capture this moment for years to come.

Writing down your Birth Story is a deeply personal experience to end your pregnancy journey. Your birth story will show many aspects of not only your labouring moments but also your pregnancy. Not everyone will feel the need to write down a birth story, but I would highly recommend it, even if only to look back on in years to come, to remember these special first moments with your child.

Tips for writing your birth story:

  • You don’t have to be a writer to write your birth story

  • Keep it real and use your emotions and feelings to guide you in your writing

  • Pack a pen and notebook in your hospital bag. This way you can jot down some moments once you have laboured as to not forget any special moments

  • Details Details Details! Once your baby is born record down all the important details; what was the weather like, gestation, who was there with you, what did labour feel like, hours laboured, medications taken, midwife/doctor names, times, dates, baby stats, smells, clothing worn etc Anything you want to remember in years to come

  • Record down your first moments; what did baby wear, what was the first thing you said to your baby, how did you feel, who was the first visitors

  • Use photos and mementos, you may have from the day

  • Don’t wait too long to write your story

  • Before you start to write your story choose a nice quiet and comfortable area. You want to be relaxed

  • When completed, read over your story, edit it and then share!
